Today, 23 June, at 5pm, is the opening of "O Denominador Comum" (A Common Denominator): a painting exhibition by Simbraz at the MANOEUVRE Gallery in Matosinhos.

Simbraz, a Mozambican painter born in the district of Milange in 1992, undertakes a pivotal mission - using art to reveal what often remains hidden from view, from understanding, and even from one's own desires. During our interview with the painter in the context of the cultural programme we've initiated at the 5th International Art Biennial of Gaia, Simbraz expressed a clear intention: he wants to "give a voice to those who don't have one". The way he does it is not predetermined, as he provides an unmistakable and unique visual distinctiveness.

Throughout a phase of the Covid-19 pandemic-induced chaos and isolation, Simbraz routinely covered a considerable distance on foot to reach the capital of Mozambique, Maputo. This allowed him to sell his paintings, demonstrating his remarkable resilience. Now, he joins us in Matosinhos with his 18 paintings, varying in size and scale, yet collectively expressing one message: I'm here. Therefore, the most meaningful action we can take in response to Simbraz's effort is to genuinely support him by appreciating his paintings.
