8, 9 and 10 June
The 5th Gaia International Art Biennial 2023 will remain open in Lever until 8 July, featuring MANOEUVRE's exhibition of artists it closely supports, alongside works from other authors within its comprehensive African art collection. However, 10 June was a particularly intense day.
MANOEUVRE has maintained a specific cultural programme from the outset, highlighting each of the artists featured in the exhibition, both showcasing their work and conducting on-site interviews aimed at creating a document that will later be available on its YouTube channel: on 10 June it was the turn of Angolan artist Nelo Teixeira. Comparing the creation method to B.B. King's guitar, Nelo Teixeira stated that he intends to fine-tune it progressively to the point where the "music" is heard at the right, unmistakable rhythm, in other words, until each particular piece of his works fits in right down to the last detail.
But 10 June was also the day when Camilo Lourenço filmed the MANOEUVRE exhibition, paying it a visit and highlighting iconic artists Malangatana, from Mozambique, and Manuel Figueira, from Cape Verde. Nelo Teixeira took the lead for Angola with "O Poder do Homem" (The Power of Man), a sculpture that is part of the series he presented at the Venice Biennial in 2015, where he represented his home country.
To top it all off, the Visual Arts Marathon / 50 Hours to Create event was held between 8 and 10 June. It was organised by the director of the biennial, Agostinho Santos, and participants included Nino Trindade, Mapfara, Simbraz, Lulu Maparangue, and Nelo Teixeira, all of them artists whose works are showcased by MANOEUVRE in pavilion A of the 5th Gaia International Art Biennial 2023.
