Butcheca at the MANOEUVRE Gallery
"O Coro dos Corpos" (The Choir of Bodies), a painting exhibition by Mozambican artist Butcheca, will be inaugurated today, at 5pm, at the MANOEUVRE Gallery in Matosinhos, closing an exhibition cycle that began on 21 April this year.
Since April, we have given each artist in the project's core group the opportunity to showcase their work in solo exhibitions, with the exception of the first exhibition, in which Reinata Sadimba was featured alongside Samuel Muankongue. This was followed by Mapfara, Kheto Lualuali, Lulu Maparangue, Simbraz, Nino Trindade, and now - Butcheca. "O Coro dos Corpos" brings together artworks from 2022, which were part of the exhibition "A Dança das Sombras" (The Dance of Shadows) held at the Camões - Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo, along with others from 2023, the result of Butcheca's artistic residency with us. We see them four by four, showing one side and the other, one time and another that escapes, showing a leap, not exactly qualitative, but modal.
Butcheca is a painter of movement, for whom drawing is the primary creator, related to something akin to a nest, a core, a potential, or a seed. His figures are animated precisely by this primary creator, and one might say they float because there is no proper ground.
Don't miss it: at the MANOEUVRE Gallery, at Rua de Tomaz Ribeiro nº 623, in Matosinhos.
